...More than 90% of the total area is forest, and less than 3% is cultivated land. Although rice and tobacco leaves are produced, agriculture is not very active. Akiu Onsen (chloride-containing earth salt spring, 24-60°C) at the source of the hot springs near Rairai Gorge has long been known as "Natori no Onsen" ("Tales of Yamato"), and flourished as the official hot spring of the Sendai domain during the Edo period. In recent years, it has become a recreational resort near Sendai, and facilities such as a forest sports park and a golf course have been developed.

...It originates near Futakuchi Pass (934m) in the Ou Mountains, and in the upper and middle reaches it cuts through Tertiary tuff to create the scenic Futakuchi Gorge and Rairai Gorge. In the middle and lower reaches it joins the Goishi River and Hirose River and flows into Sendai Bay. In the upper reaches there are Futakuchi Onsen (gypsum spring, 23-32°C) and Akiu Onsen (salt spring, 24-60°C), and the Kamafusa Dam is located on the Goishi River. The Sasaya Highway (National Route 286) runs from Sendai along the Natori River and Goishi River to Yamagata, and was an important route for transporting goods in the early modern period. ...
