Ritsuryo

Japanese:
Ritsuryo

In Chinese and Japanese musical terminology, it is also called "ryorits."

(1) The meaning of the temperament. The six odd-numbered temperaments of the twelve tunes are called ritsu, and the six even-numbered temperaments are called ryo (rokuritsu rokuryo), and the two are collectively called "juuniritsu ryo." Ritsu ryo is also called "rakuritsu" as an abbreviation.

(2) A term used to classify modes or scales into two categories. This classification is for convenience, and the content has changed over time. Currently, the three modes Ichikotsucho, Sojo, and Taishikicho are classified as Ryosen, while the three modes Hyojo, Oushikicho, and Banshikicho are classified as Rissen. In this case, the meaning is different from Ritsu-Ryu, which classifies the individual notes of the Twelve Rhythms into two categories. For example, Ichikotsucho belongs to Ryosen, but the note of Ichikotsu is Ritsu.
