Iwaya - Iware

An ancient place name in the central part of Nara Prefecture, near the Abe district of Sakurai City. Located at the northeastern foot of Mount Ame-no-Kaguyama, it was a politically important location for the Yamato Imperial Court. According to the "Nihon Shoki," in addition to Emperor Richu's Wakasakura Palace, it is said to have been the site of the imperial palaces of Emperors Seinei and Keitai. The Iwaya Pond mentioned in the "Nihon Shoki" and Prince Otsu's poem "I saw the ducks crowing in the Iwaya Pond, which is a hundred years old, today only, and I hide in the clouds" (Manyoshu, Volume 3) is estimated to have been located in the area from Ikenouchi in Sakurai City to Higashiikejiri-cho in Kashihara City.

奈良県中部、桜井市阿部地区付近の古地名。天香久山(あめのかぐやま)北東麓(ほくとうろく)にあたり、大和(やまと)朝廷の政治的要地であった。『日本書紀』によれば、履中(りちゅう)天皇の磐余稚桜宮(わかさくらのみや)のほか、清寧(せいねい)天皇、継体(けいたい)天皇などの皇居があったといわれる。大津皇子(おおつのみこ)の「百(もも)伝ふ磐余の池に鳴く鴨(かも)を今日(きょう)のみ見てや雲隠(くもがく)りなむ」（『万葉集』巻3）や『日本書紀』に記された磐余池は、桜井市大字池之内から橿原(かしはら)市東池尻町付近にあったと推定される。
