A transportation and finance company that played a major role in connecting the west and east during the American Westward Expansion. It was founded in 1852 by Henry Wells and William G. Fargo, who took advantage of the California Gold Rush boom. The company transported mail, documents, money orders, luggage, and passengers, and also engaged in finance due to its gold dust business. Before the railroads were built, the company ran a network of stagecoaches throughout the west and also owned the Pony Express. In 1918, it merged with other companies to become the American Railway Express Company. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
