A Czech historian specializing in South Slavic countries. Son of Josef Jireček (1825-88), a well-known Slavic scholar, linguist, historian, and politician. After studying history at the University of Prague, he devoted himself to national education in Bulgaria, and served as Minister of Education in Bulgaria after its independence from Ottoman Turkey (1881-84). His major work, A History of Bulgaria (1876), which was his doctoral thesis, was a work based on thorough positivism backed by linguistics, and is still highly regarded today as the first academic work in Bulgaria.

南スラブ諸国専門のチェコ人史家。スラブ学･言語学･歴史学者，政治家として著名なヨーゼフ･イレチェクJosef Jireček(1825‐88)の子。プラハ大学で歴史学を修めたのち，ブルガリアの国民教育に情熱を傾け，オスマン･トルコから独立したブルガリアで文部大臣を務める(1881‐84)。学位論文であった主著《ブルガリア史》(1876)は言語学に裏付けられた徹底的な実証主義に基づく成果で，ブルガリアにおける最初の学問的著作として今日でも高く評価されている。
