1854‐1918 A Czech historian specializing in South Slavic countries. Son of Josef Jireček (1825-88), a well-known Slavic scholar, linguist, historian, and politician. After studying history at the University of Prague, he devoted himself to national education in Bulgaria, and served as Minister of Education in Bulgaria after its independence from Ottoman Turkey (1881-84). His major work, A History of Bulgaria (1876), which was his doctoral thesis, was a work based on thorough positivism backed by linguistics, and is still highly regarded today as the first academic work in Bulgaria.
