St. Andrew's Cathedral is located in Wells, a city in Somerset, southwest England. It is the first Gothic building in the Early English style. The first construction was started around 1180 by Reginald, Bishop of Bath, and was later taken over by Bishop Jocelin. The nave, chancel, aisles, transepts and west façade were completed in 1239. In the second construction (1290-1340), the east transept and east façade were completed, and the chapter house and lady chapel with polygonal plan were built. However, the two western towers, which were attempted to be built in the late 14th century and early 15th century, were left unfinished, and the cloisters were built between 1425 and 1500. The most unique feature of this cathedral is the arch supporting the central tower, which was installed at the intersection of the nave and transept in 1338. (→ English Gothic style)
