Sakamakigai (reverse spiral shell) - Sakamakigai (English spelling) bladder snail
A left-handed freshwater snail of the family Polytminae (illustration). The shell is about 12 mm high and 6 mm wide, yellowish brown, translucent and shiny. It has seven small, cone-shaped coils, the last of which is large and bulging. The soft body is blackish, with long, thin antennae on the head, with eyes at their base. The mantle membrane extends from the opening of the shell onto the surface, with finger-like protrusions. It is omnivorous, eating meaty things as well, and has a sharp, pointed radula. It lays gelatinous egg masses on aquatic plants. Native to Europe, it was introduced to Japan on aquatic plants for keeping tropical fish, but it spread rapidly around the country from around 1940, and is now found all over the country, from Hokkaido to Okinawa.
