King of Spain (reigned 1556-1598). Son of Charles V of the House of Habsburg, and ardent Catholic. Husband of Mary I, Queen of England. Ruled a global empire spanning Spain, Portugal, Naples, Milan, the Netherlands, the Americas, and the Philippines, and won a major victory over the Turks in the Battle of Lepanto. He led the Counter-Reformation by suppressing Protestants, and built the El Escorial Palace. He suffered a major blow with his defeat in the Eighty Years' War and the destruction of the Spanish Armada.
