Venetian School (English spelling: Scuola Veneziana, Italian)

A general term for musicians who were active in the 16th century, mainly at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. Since the Flemish composer Willaert became the conductor of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice in 1527, a unique style of liturgical music called cori spezzati (partial chanting) was developed here, taking advantage of the special structure of the cathedral. This style was established under the next conductor, De Lore, and then Zarlino, and new instrumental music was also created by the organists Merulo and Andrea Gabrieli. Towards the end of the 16th century, the performance of liturgical music by partial chanting with instrumental accompaniment became common, and music composed by organist Giovanni Gabrieli was performed frequently, bringing the Venetian school to its peak.
