...Unlike the Latin people's tendency to seek magnificent and gorgeous external forms, the strict and austere people of the North, who espoused Protestantism, had a strong mystical tendency to dive directly into their own inner selves, and printmaking, a minor art, was, so to speak, a place for the private expression of this inner dive and meditation. In that respect, the medieval Andachtsbild (prayer statues), which were born out of personal and mystical sentiments, must be said to have been a distinctively German creation.
