Japanese lily - Japanese lily
A perennial plant of the Rosaceae family that grows wild in the mountains of Japan (illustration). It is 0.3-1m tall and has compound leaves with two triplicates. The leaflets are ovate, 5-10cm long, and have sawtooth edges. It is dioecious and produces flowers in clusters from June to August. The male flowers have about 20 stamens, and the female flowers later produce three oblong capsules about 2mm long. It is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and as a species it is widely found in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere. There is a great deal of variation in the size of the plant body and the shape of the leaflets, and several other varieties are distinguished even in Japan.
