Stump-tailed macaque (Macaca arctoides) (M. speciosa)

An ugly Old World monkey of the Cercopithecidae family of primates (illustration) with a red face and pockmarked spots. Its English name is stump-tailed monkey, due to its short, stump-like tail. It is widely distributed from southern China to the Indochina Peninsula, Myanmar, and Assam. It has a stocky body and brown or gray-brown fur. Its shoulder hair is well developed. Its face becomes redder when it is in heat or excited, and turns bluish when it is cold. Its size is slightly smaller than that of the Japanese macaque. The faces of babies are pale and covered entirely in white or pale yellow fur.

赤い顔にあばた状の斑をもつ醜い霊長目オナガザル科の旧世界ザル（イラスト）。英名は尾が切株のように短いところからstump‐tailed monkey。中国南部からインドシナ半島，ミャンマー，アッサム地方に広く分布する。ずんぐりした体つきで，体毛は茶褐色ないし灰褐色。肩の毛がよく発達している。顔は発情時や興奮時にはより赤みを増し，寒いときには青みを帯びる。体格はニホンザルよりやや小さい程度。赤ん坊の顔は青白くて全身白色ないし淡黄色の毛に覆われている。
