A Kabuki play. A domestic drama in four acts. Written by Tokusaburo Chikamatsu. Commonly known as "Ise Ondo." It premiered in July 1796 (Kansei 8) at a theater in Kado, Osaka. It is an unusual play that quickly dramatizes an incident that occurred in May of the same year at "Aburaya" in Furuichi, Ise, where a doctor named Mago Fukuitsuki killed nine people over a woman he knew. It later became a popular kyogen play in the summer theater, and the third act, "Aburaya," which is the highlight of the play, has a sophisticated arrangement and technique from the severing of ties to the murder, and is often performed independently. Fukuoka Mitsugi, the priest of Ise, struggles to obtain the sword Aoe Shimosaka for his former master's son Imada Manjiro, but finally gets the sword. However, Mitsugi's lover, Onon of the oil shop, pretends to be in love with Kitaroku and dislikes Mitsugi in order to steal the sword's origami from Aidama-ya Kitaroku. In anger, Mitsugi kills many people, including Kitaroku and Nakai Manno, with Shimosaka's sword, and tries to commit seppuku, but Onon and Kisuke, a cook who is his former retainer, stop him, and he heads to Manjiro with the sword and origami. In addition, the opening act (Ainoyama, Myokencho Inn, Okake, Futamigaura) is about Mitsugu capturing the sword thieves Sugiyama Okura and Kuwahara Joshirou, and the second act (Daidaiko) is about Mitsugu being framed for stealing money from the Daidaiko and being saved by his aunt Omine. Sometimes, the play is performed in its entirety. "Aburaya" has also been adapted into Gidayu and Tokiwazu.
