Capelin - Karafuto Shishamo (English spelling)

A marine fish of the order Osmeridae, family Osmeridae, class of Osteichthyes. It is widely distributed in the North Pacific, Arctic, and North Atlantic Oceans. In Japan, it lives along the coast of the Sea of ​​Okhotsk in Hokkaido. Although it is called Shishamo, it is a different genus and species from Shishamo. It is easily distinguished from Shishamo because it has small scales, with about 200 scales from the top of the gill slits to the base of the tail fin, which cannot be counted with the naked eye, and the rear end of the upper jaw reaches below the center of the eye. It grows to about 24 centimeters in length. In Japan, it spawns on sandy bottoms near the coast from spring to summer. Almost all of the Shishamo sold in Japan are imported from Alaska and Northern European countries, and the raw dried Shishamo is sold under the name Shishamo with roe.

硬骨魚綱キュウリウオ目キュウリウオ科の海水魚。北太平洋、北極海、北大西洋にかけて広く分布する。日本では北海道のオホーツク海の沿岸にすむ。シシャモの名前がついているが、シシャモとは別属、別種。鱗(うろこ)が小さくて、鰓孔(さいこう)の上部から尾びれの付け根までおよそ200枚前後の鱗があり、肉眼では数えられないこと、上顎(じょうがく)の後端は目の中央下に達することなどで、容易に区別できる。体長は24センチメートルぐらいになる。日本では春から夏にかけて海岸近くの砂底で産卵する。日本で販売されているものは、ほとんどすべてアラスカや北欧諸国から輸入されており、生干しにしたものが子持ちししゃもの名前で流通している。
