Spee - Friedrich Spee von Langenfeld

German Jesuit priest and poet. He was involved in church activities throughout Germany, and in Franconia he served as a confessor to women who had been sentenced to death in witchcraft trials. After he was unable to save those who were innocent despite believing them to be innocent, he wrote "A Warning to the Judges" in 1631, which laid the foundation for the abolition of this crime. His only collection of poems, "A Race for the Nightingale," published 14 years after his death, is pious, profound, and elegant, and later had a great influence on Romantic poets.

ドイツのイエズス会神父、詩人。ドイツ各地で教会活動についていたが、フランケン地方では魔女裁判で死刑判決を受けた女たちの聴悔(ちょうかい)師を務めた。無実を信じながらも救えなかった経験から、1631年『裁判官への警告』を著し、この非行廃絶の基をつくった。死の14年後に出版された唯一の詩集『ナイチンゲールに競って』は、敬虔(けいけん)かつ深遠優麗で、のちにロマン派の詩人に大きな影響を与えた。
