In Greek legend, Laocoön was a Trojan prince and a priest of Apollo. During the Trojan War, he was opposed to the introduction of the Wooden Horse, and was strangled to death along with his two sons by two giant snakes sent by Athena. The marble sculpture depicting this figure, Laocoön and His Sons (discovered in 1506 at the ruins of the Baths of Titus in Rome, housed in the Vatican Museums), was created by sculptors from Rhodes in the 1st century BC, and its excessive Roman tragic nature influenced later generations, becoming the starting point for Lessing's critical essay, Laocoön.
