At the end of the Sui Dynasty, when rebellions broke out in various places, Hua Ji led a group of soldiers who wanted to return north and killed Emperor Yang in Jiangdu. Hua Ji tried to support Emperor Yang's nephew Yang Hao and return north, but he killed Yang Hao on the way and took the throne himself. He named his country Xu, named the era Tianshou, and appointed various officials. He was eventually defeated in a battle with Dou Jiande and beheaded.
