Gun propellant

Gunpowder is used to launch objects by burning in the chamber of a gun and generating gas pressure. In Japan, it is distinguished from the propellant used to launch rockets. Black powder (smokeless powder) and smokeless powder are used as propellants. Black powder is no longer used as a propellant, except for launching fireworks and for matchlock gun demonstrations.

銃砲の薬室内で燃焼し、発生したガス圧によって物体を発射するために用いる火薬。日本ではロケットを飛ばす推進薬と区別されている。発射薬としては黒色火薬（有煙火薬）と無煙火薬が用いられている。花火の打上げ用および火縄銃の演武用を除いては黒色火薬は発射薬として用いられなくなってきた。
