A perennial, evergreen herb of the family Vulgaris, closely related to the ball fern, but also resembling low shrubs at first glance. Some species have creeping roots, but those that grow upright are hard, form low clumps, and are covered with densely compressed scales. The leaves, which grow at joints on the rhizome, are sparsely arranged or in evenly spaced clusters, simple, entire, often narrowly elliptical, with pointed tips, and papery to leathery. The veins are free and run parallel to the leaf margin. The sporangia are located above the veins, often close to the midrib. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
