(1828-98). His real name was Kako Nihei. He was born in Kakogawa, Banshu (Hyogo Prefecture). He was adopted by Takemoto Sengadayu, and in 1839 (Tenpo 10) he became the apprentice of Toyosawa Hirosuke III. After going through the names Chikaramatsu and Ushinosuke, in 1844 (Koka 1) he took on the childhood name of Hirosuke II and became Danpei. Since then, he played shamisen for Takemoto Nagatodayu III and Takemoto Shundayu V, as well as Takemoto Koshijidayu II (later known as Takemoto Settsu Daijo) and Takemoto Osumidayu III, becoming a major figure in leading the flourishing of the Bunraku world in the Meiji period. He composed many pieces, including "Tsubosaka Kannon Miracle Chronicle," "The Origin of the Good Pedestrian Cedar," and "Kanjincho." On April 1, 1898, he died of a cerebral hemorrhage on stage during the "Shido-ji" scene in "Hana no Ueno Homare no Ishibumi."

III

(1858-1921) A disciple of the second. His real name was Uehata Kuichi. His previous name was Toyosawa Senzaemon IV. He took the name in 1907 (Meiji 40). Although his style was casual, he had good rhythm, and after appearing at the Horieza and Chikamatsuza theaters, he moved to Tokyo in his later years.

2世

(1828―98)本名加古仁兵衛。播州(ばんしゅう)(兵庫県)加古川生まれ。竹本千賀太夫の養子となり、1839年(天保10)3世豊沢広助(ひろすけ)に入門。力松、丑之助を経て、1844年(弘化1)2世広助の幼名を継いで団平となった。以来、3世竹本長門太夫(ながとだゆう)や5世竹本春太夫を弾き、また2世竹本越路太夫(こしじだゆう)(後の竹本摂津大掾(せっつのだいじょう))や3世竹本大隅太夫(おおすみだゆう)の三味線を弾き、明治文楽(ぶんらく)界を隆盛に導く大きな存在となった。『壺坂観音霊験記(つぼさかかんのんれいげんき)』『良弁杉由来(ろうべんすぎのゆらい)』『勧進帳(かんじんちょう)』など作曲も多い。明治31年4月1日、『花上野誉石碑(はなのうえのほまれのいしぶみ)』「志渡寺(しどうじ)」の段の舞台で脳溢血(のういっけつ)をおこし、没した。

3世

(1858―1921)2世の門弟。本名植畑九市。前名は4世豊沢仙左衛門(せんざえもん)。1907年(明治40)に襲名。じみな芸風ながら間拍子(まびょうし)がよく、堀江座や近松座へ出演したのち、晩年は東京へ移った。
