A 13th-century French scholar. His real name was Pierre de Maricourt, and his Latin name was Petrus Peregrinus. Dates of birth and death unknown. Originally from Picardy, he was a fellow student of R. Bacon when he was in Paris. In 1269, Peregrinus wrote "Letters on the Magnet" during the campaign when Charles of Anjou set out to conquer Lucerne in Italy. He is thought to have served in the army as an engineer. In "Letters on the Magnet," he describes how to find the poles of a natural magnet, describes how cutting a magnet in two reveals the poles at the cut surface, and formulates the reason why magnets attract each other.
