Italian theologian, biblical scholar, author of De Propositions. Born in Novara, he studied at schools in Bologna, Reims, and Paris, and then taught at the School of Notre Dame de Paris and gained fame as a theologian. He was appointed Bishop of Paris in 1159 and died the following year. As a biblical scholar, Lombard supplemented the work of Anselm of Laon and Gilbertus Polletanus on the exegesis of the Bible, and his commentaries were widely used as textbooks. In parallel with his work on the exegesis of the Bible, he attempted to provide a concise exposition of the entire doctrine of Christianity based on the Bible and the writings of the Church Fathers and authoritative scholars of the church, completing four volumes of De Propositions.

イタリアの神学者，聖書学者，《命題論集》の著者。ノバラで生まれ，ボローニャ，ランス，パリの学校で勉学の後，ノートル･ダム大聖堂付属学校で教え，神学者として名声を博する。1159年パリ司教に任命され，その翌年没。聖書学者としてのロンバルドゥスはラオンのアンセルムス，ギルベルトゥス･ポレタヌスによる聖書釈義の仕事を補足しており，その注釈書は教科書として広く用いられた。さらに聖書釈義の仕事と並行して，キリスト教の教義の全体を聖書および教父，教会の権威ある学者たちの著作にもとづいて簡潔に叙述することを企て，《命題論集》4巻を完成した。
