A Portuguese-born scholastic scholar, he studied at the University of Paris and wrote his "Outline of Logic" around 1230. He also rose to great heights as a Christian clergyman, becoming pope in 1276 and taking the name Johannes XXI, but after only eight months in office he was crushed to death when the ceiling of his study collapsed. His "Outline of Logic" was an extremely excellent work, surpassing Aristotle's logic work, and was used as a textbook in European universities until the 17th century. [Yamashita Masao]

ポルトガル生れのスコラ学者。パリ大学で学び，1230年ころ《論理学綱要》を書いた。他方，キリスト教聖職者としての道を登りつめ，76年教皇となり，ヨハネス21世Johannes XXIを名のったが，在位8ヵ月にして，書斎の天井が崩壊しその下敷きとなって死去した。彼の《論理学綱要》はアリストテレスの論理学書を上回る，きわめて優れた書物であり，17世紀までヨーロッパの大学で教科書として使用された。【山下正男】
