The leaves on the stem are long ovate, thinner at the top, and have shorter petioles. In early summer, it produces large flowers that hang downward. The calyx has five lobes at the tip, and there are appendages between the lobes that curve outward. The corolla is white or pale purple, bell-shaped, 4-5 cm long and 3 cm in diameter, with dark spots on the inside. C. punctata var. hondoensis , which grows in the mountains of central Honshu, is similar to this species, but has no appendages between the calyx lobes.
