A pile of earth or stone on which a structure is to be built. It enhances the building's appearance and prevents moisture and uneven settlement. Broadly speaking, it can be built up by using the natural ground as is, or by digging into the ground and then tamping alternate layers of soil, sand, and stones from the bottom. Stones, tiles, and plaster are used to decorate and protect the top and sides. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
