New Zealand's capital. Located at the southern tip of North Island, in the Wellington region, facing Cook Strait. Surrounding Wellington Bay (formerly Nicholson Bay), the city is built on reclaimed land, narrow coastal lowlands, and hills. The average temperature is 1°C (coldest month) to 26°C (warmest month), and the average annual precipitation is 1271mm. Discovered by a Polynesian coupe in the 10th century, construction of the city by the British began in 1839, and it replaced Auckland as the capital in 1865. It is the commercial and financial center of the country, and a wide range of industries have developed, including clothing, transport equipment, food, printing, metals, machinery, and chemicals, centered around the Wellington Hut area. Petroleum products, minerals, and automobiles are imported through Wellington Port, and frozen meat, newsprint, wool, cheese, and fruit are exported. There are Victoria University (1897), the National Art Gallery, museums, central library, zoo, botanical gardens, parks, and sports grounds. The government building was built in 1876 and is famous as one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. It is the center of domestic air routes and also has an international airport.
