…Although skill is required in wiping off the ink, the effect is almost the same as that of modern photographic printing. The German Ludwig von Siegen (c. 1609-80) discovered this technique before 1642, and Prince Ruprecht (1619-82) improved it. This technique was popular in the Netherlands as a way to reproduce paintings, under Cornelis Dusart (1660-1704), and in 18th-century England it produced reproduction printmakers such as John Raphael Smith (1752-1813), James MacAdell (1728-65), and Thomas Watson (1748-81), and was even called "English printmaking manière anglaise." …

...It is possible to freely create intermediate tones. It is said to have been pioneered by the German Ludwig von Siegen (1609-80), who was active in the Netherlands in the mid-17th century, but Dürer and Rembrandt also used this technique in parts without any particular awareness. Mezzotint can accurately reproduce the light and dark tones of a painting, like a black-and-white photograph, and was particularly popular in the Netherlands and England in the 18th century.
