A city in northeastern Hokkaido. Established as a city in 1947. Location of the Okhotsk General Bureau. The city developed at the mouth of the Abashiri River, south of Cape Notoro, which juts out into the Sea of ​​Okhotsk. The Senmo Main Line and Sekihoku Main Line run through the city. From the west of the city, four lagoons, Lake Notoro, Lake Abashiri, Lake Mokoto, and Lake Tofutsu, line the city, and there are sandy beaches. It is the base of deep-sea fishing, and salmon and trout are caught. Aquaculture and the marine product processing industry, such as canned fish, tsukudani, and grilled chikuwa, are also thriving. The Koshimizu Primeval Flower Garden, lagoon, and coastal areas belong to the Abashiri Quasi-National Park. Drift ice comes ashore around the end of January, and you can experience drift ice at the Okhotsk Drift Ice Museum on Mount Tento. There is the Moyoro Shell Mound (historic site). In 2005, Lake Tofutsu became a Ramsar Convention registered wetland. 471.00 km2 . 40,998 people (2010).

北海道北東部の市。1947年市制。オホーツク総合振興局所在地。オホーツク海に突出した能取(のとろ)岬の南,網走川の河口に市街が発達,釧網(せんもう)本線,石北本線が通じる。市域西部から能取湖,網走湖,藻琴湖,濤沸(とうふつ)湖の4潟湖(かたこ)が並び,砂浜が続く。遠洋漁業の根拠地で,サケ,マスなどの漁獲があり,栽培漁業やかん詰,佃煮(つくだに),焼ちくわなどの水産加工業も盛ん。小清水原生花園,潟湖や海岸部は網走国定公園に属する。1月末頃流氷が接岸するが,天都山にはオホーツク流氷館があって,流氷体験ができる。モヨロ貝塚(史跡)がある。2005年に濤沸湖がラムサール条約登録湿地となる。471.00km2。4万998人(2010)。
