Biography: His maternal grandfather was Al Hansen, a member of the art collective Fluxus, and his father was David Campbell, a bluegrass arranger. He became independent after his parents divorced. He was influenced by blues and folk music from an early age, and after dropping out of high school, he played acoustic guitar on the street. In 1993, he released the single "Loser," which he recorded in four hours, on an indie label. This single caused a big stir, especially on the college charts, and in 1994, he signed with major label Geffen and released his first album, "Mellow Gold," which included the song. He visited Japan for the first time that same year. In 1996, his second album, "Odelay," became a hit not only in the United States but around the world, and in 1997 he won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance and the Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for the song "Where It's At," winning two Grammy Awards. When he came to Japan on a tour of Japan after the release of his album "New Topations" in 1999, he also held an art exhibition in collaboration with his grandfather Al Hansen. Their 2008 album Modern Guilt reached number 4 in the US and number 9 in the UK, and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Alternative Album. In 2015, they won a Grammy for Best Album for Morning Phase. Their other albums include Midnight Vultures, Guero, and The Information.
