British politician. He became a Labour MP in 1945, and served as Minister for Fuel and Power, Minister for Economy, and Chancellor of the Exchequer. He promoted the nationalization of important industries. He was an economic expert and belonged to the right wing of the Labour Party. In 1955, he succeeded Attlee as leader of the party, but the party lost the 1959 general election and died suddenly without being able to form a government.
