Pater, Walter Horatio

Pater, Walter Horatio
Born: August 4, 1839, London
[Died] July 30, 1894. Oxford. British critic and essayist. Studied at Oxford University, where he spent most of his life as a research fellow. As a student, he became familiar with Ruskin's "Modern Painters" and resonated with the aesthetic movement of the Pre-Raphaelites. His breakthrough work, Studies in the History of the Renaissance (1873), is a succinct expression of his aesthetic ideas, using Renaissance artists as its subject. Other works he produced include the novel Marius the Epicurean (85), the collection of short stories Imaginary Portraits (87), Appreciations (89) on his native literature, Plato and Platonism (93), the posthumous Greek Studies (95), and the unfinished novel Gaston de Latour (96). In both his style and his ideas, he had a great influence on fin de siecle literature such as Wilde and G. Moore, and, through Yeats, on 20th century writers.
