A city in County Kerry in the southwest of the Republic of Ireland. Population 9,391 (2002 census preliminary figure). Located in the lowlands of North Kerry, on the shores of Lough Leane, it is a market town in a rural area on a par with Tralee and Listowel. In addition to livestock farming, traditional industries such as footwear, hooks, and mineral water manufacturing are also found here. The surrounding area is known for its scenic beauty, including Lake Killarney, Mount Carantoul, and Ross Castle, and is popular with tourists.
