A lacquer artist. His real name was Heizaemon. Born into a family of lacquer craftsmen in Tokyo, he learned makie (lacquer painting) from his father, and trained in Japanese painting under Kano Hisanobu and Terasaki Kogyo, while also studying oil painting at the Hakuba-kai Institute. His works are characterized by their exquisite and elegant expression. While following traditional techniques, many of his works incorporate Western painting techniques to create realistic depictions. At the 8th Imperial Fine Arts Academy Exhibition in 1927 (Showa 2), a new section on crafts was added to the fourth division, and he served as a judge for lacquer work. He became a member of the Imperial Fine Arts Academy in 1930. [Goka loyal retainer] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
