Atlas linguistique de la France

Japanese: 《Atlas linguistique de la France》(英語表記)AtlaslinguistiquedelaFrance
Atlas linguistique de la France

...It began with G. Wenker (1852-1911) of Germany and was established by J. Gillieron of France. This is symbolized by the 35 volumes and supplements of the Atlas linguistique de la France (1902-09, 14, 20), co-authored by Gillieron and his assistant E. Edmont (1854-1926). What linguistic geography has revealed is that "words have their own history," and that although it is possible to draw boundaries (isoglosses) between words, it is not possible to draw boundaries between languages.

From [Jillieron]

...J. Gilliéron (who happened to be born and died in the same year as Gilliéron) conducted on-site interviews on certain survey items in 638 locations throughout France and in the surrounding French-speaking regions, and published the results in a 1946-page language map (including Corsica). This resulted in the 35 volumes of the Atlas linguistique de la France (1902-14) and one supplementary volume (1920). Unfortunately, his rough-and-tumble nature as a "country bumpkin" caused him to have poor relationships with people at his alma mater, and he also tended to be isolated in the academic world as a pioneer in a new field.
