Kagoshima [city] - Kagoshima
Kagoshima City covers the entire eastern part of the Satsuma Peninsula and Sakurajima in Kagoshima Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889 and is the prefectural capital. The city center on the Kotsuki River delta overlooking Kagoshima Bay developed as a castle town of the Shimazu clan and became the center of southern Kyushu. It is the base of the Kyushu Shinkansen, the Kagoshima-Nippo Main Line, the Ibusuki-Makurazaki Line, the Kyushu Expressway, and National Route 3, and is an important location for intra-prefectural shipping routes. The city has a high ratio of employees in the tertiary industry and has a strong commercial character. The government office district is located around the castle ruins, and the downtown area has developed around Tenmonkan Street. Small industries such as shochu, tobacco, wood products, Oshima tsumugi, and Satsuma ware are carried out, but the reclaimed land in the waterfront area of Taniyama has become an industrial zone, and there is also an oil storage facility in Kiire in the south. In recent years, Kagoshima Bay has been developed as a base for marine leisure activities. Vegetable cultivation and livestock farming are also carried out. Kagoshima Prefecture is home to Kagoshima University, Shiroyama (a natural monument and historic site), Tempozan Park, Iso Teien Garden (a scenic spot), and Kamoike Park. Numerous hot springs are found in the city area. In 1967, it merged with Taniyama City. In November 2004, it merged with Yoshida Town in Kagoshima County, Sakurajima Town in Sakurajima City, Kiire Town in Ibusuki County, Matsumoto Town in Hioki County, and Koriyama Town.
