A basic unit of measurement for determining the size of architectural components or architectural space, or a set of such measurements. Adjusting the dimensions of a building and its components using architectural modules is called modular coordination (or modular division). In the past, the general interpretation was that it played a role in determining the proportional relationship between the dimensions of each part of a building, but the term only came into widespread use after World War I, and especially after World War II, when the industrialization of architecture began to take hold.
