Greek goddess of the hearth. She is the same as the Roman Vesta, and was the eldest daughter of Cronus and Rhea. She was courted by Apollo and Poseidon, but Zeus granted her permission to remain a virgin forever, and furthermore granted her the right to be worshipped in every home and temple. Just as the hearth was the center of family life, Hestia occupied a central position in the home of the gods, and therefore, while the other gods roamed the world, she always remained on Olympus. Therefore, there is no mythology about this goddess. She played an important religious role not as a personal deity, but as the personification of the idea of the hearth.
