This is an acrobatics trick in which one passes through a basket woven from bamboo. According to the Wakan Sansai Zue, Kodaka Izumi and Karasaki Ryunosuke came from Nagasaki during the Enpo era (1673-81) and started it in Osaka. A bamboo basket with a diameter of 40-45cm and a length of 2-2.5m is placed on a platform about 2m above the ground, and the performer passes through it in an instant. There was also a trick in which a candle or a blade is placed inside the basket and the performer passes through it. It seems to have been introduced from China and was popular throughout the Edo period. [Oda Koji] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
