On the other hand, there are many slang expressions related to smell and nose in the West and especially in Japan, such as "(He) stinks," "suspicious," "scandal," "irritating," and "unbearable." From this, it is certain that the sense of smell has a wide scope that goes beyond the narrow physiological aspect and covers human, social, and ethical dimensions. In fact, it is literally the sense of smell that quickly detects the atmosphere that hangs over a place and the subtle nuances floating between people. Hubertus Tellenbach (1914- ), a German psychiatrist who noticed this point, emphasized the importance of smell and taste, regarding them as "the senses that mediate human encounters at the deepest level." A case of autosmia seems to be a clear example of this view; sufferers believe that "an unpleasant odor emanates from their body, causing people around them to look away or make expressions of disgust," but psychologically, they are simply sensing through their sense of smell anxiety, distrust, and alienation in human relationships.
