Dubai (English spelling)

Dubai (English spelling)
Also spelled Dubai. One of the emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates, it forms a triangle inland with a 72km coastline overlooking the Persian Gulf as its baseline. The capital, Dubai, is the largest city in the federation. Most of the population of this emirate lives in the capital and its surrounding areas. It was part of Abu Dhabi until 1833, when a part of the Baniyas tribe occupied Dubai in the same year during a civil war, and it flourished as a small country thereafter. It signed a treaty with the United Kingdom and was under its protection, but in 1971 it became a member state of the federation when it was established. It was an important port until the beginning of the 20th century, exporting pearls, but it is also famous as a port for smuggling gold. In 1966, an oil field was discovered, and although the estimated reserves are relatively small at 1.3 billion barrels, they are the basis of prosperity along with other trades. With abundant funds, modernization of cities and ports is progressing. Its area is 3,900 km2 , second only to Abu Dhabi. Population: 501,000 (1991 estimate).
