There is a story behind the creation of Chikubushima Island: Long ago, there lived Tatamihiko-no-Mikoto (Ibuki-no-take no Kami) on Mt. Ibuki, his sister Hisashi-hime-no-Mikoto on Kue-no-mine, and his niece Asai-hime-no-Mikoto on Asai-no-Oka. One day, Ibuki-no-take and Asai-no-Oka had a height contest, and Asai-no-Oka grew taller overnight. In anger, Ibuki-no-take no Kami slashed Asai-hime to death.
