An island in the Pacific Ocean in the western Gulf of Alaska, Alaska, USA. It is home to many wildlife species, including the world's largest black bear, seals, and wild birds. Salmon fishing is thriving here. It is also known for its king crab. In 1784, the Russians established the first colony in Alaska. The capital city is Kodiak. Area: 13,890 km2 . Population: 13,592 (2010).
