Haruuji Ashikaga

A military commander in the Sengoku period. Son of Takamoto. Childhood name Kamewakamaru. His mother was the daughter of Utsunomiya Shigetsuna. He was the 4th Koga kubo. He married the elder sister of Hojo Ujitsuna and attempted to recover his power with the backing of the Hojo clan's influence, but after Ujitsuna's death in 1545 (Tenbun 14), he severed ties with the Hojo clan. In October of the same year, he attacked Musashi Kawagoe Castle on the Hojo side with Uesugi Norimasa and others, but was defeated by the forces of Hojo Ujiyasu and returned to Koga. After that, he tried to restore the system, but failed, and in 1552 he handed over the family headship to his son Yoshiuji. In 1554, he attempted to kill Ujiyasu together with his son Fujiuji, but failed. Instead, Koga Castle was taken from him, and he was imprisoned in Hatano, Sagami, by Ujiyasu, and then forced to retire to Sekiyado, Shimousa, where he died on May 27, 1560. His grave is at Soei-ji Temple in Sekiyadodai-cho, Noda City, Chiba Prefecture.

戦国時代の武将。高基(たかもと)の子。幼名亀若丸。母は宇都宮成綱(しげつな)の娘。古河公方(こがくぼう)第4代。北条氏綱(うじつな)の姉を妻にし、北条氏の勢威を背景に勢力の回復を図ったが、氏綱の死により1545年（天文14）には北条氏との関係を断った。同年10月上杉憲政(のりまさ)らとともに北条側の武蔵(むさし)河越(かわごえ)城を攻めたが、北条氏康(うじやす)軍のために敗れ古河に帰った。以後体制の立て直しを策したが失敗し、1552年家督を子の義氏(よしうじ)に譲った。1554年には子の藤氏とともに氏康を討とうとしたが失敗し、逆に古河城を落とされ、氏康により相模(さがみ)の波多野に幽閉、ついで下総(しもうさ)の関宿(せきやど)に隠居させられ、永禄(えいろく)3年5月27日同地にて没した。墓は千葉県野田市関宿台町の宗英寺にある。
