A flying animal of the order Pterosaur, a reptile. Fossils were found in the Upper Cretaceous of Kansas, USA. It has naked skin, no scales or feathers. Pteranodon ingens, characterized by a long crest at the back of its skull, has a wingspan of 7m, while Pteranodon sternbergi, also characterized by a towering crest at the back of its skull, has a wingspan of 9m. Both species are thought to have nested on coastal cliffs and preyed on fish. Their wing bones are hollow and light, and Pteranodon ingens is estimated to have weighed 17kg.
