The process of determining the economic value of individual livestock. In the case of practical livestock used for production, it is easy to assess their value as long as the individual is highly productive, but in the case of breeding stock, which are used for breeding and reproduction, they must have high productivity, an excellent body type that allows them to fully utilize that ability, and be able to reliably pass on these virtues to their offspring. For this reason, breeding stock are evaluated in a combination of ability evaluation, appearance evaluation, and pedigree evaluation, which evaluate these three aspects. However, when people generally talk about evaluation, they are often referring to appearance evaluation.

家畜の個体の経済的価値を判定すること。家畜のうち生産に従事する実用畜の場合は，その個体自身の生産性が優れていれば良いので価値の評価は簡単であるが，育種･繁殖用の個体である種畜の場合は高い生産能力を持ち，その能力を十分に発揮できる優れた体型を備え，かつこれらの美点を確実に子孫に伝えるものでなければならない。そのため種畜の審査ではこの三つの面を評価する能力審査，外貌審査，血統審査があわせ行われる。　しかし一般に審査といえばこの中の外貌審査を指す場合が多い。
