Hexane

Japanese: ヘキサン
Hexane

C 6 H 14 (86.18). CH 3 (CH 2 ) 4 CH 3 . Paraffin with 6 carbon atoms has 5 isomers. Although these isomers are sometimes referred to collectively, the straight-chain one is specifically called hexane, and is often called n -hexane. It is found in petroleum hydrocarbon cracking oil and crude oil. In the laboratory, it can be obtained by condensing two molecules of propyl iodide with metallic sodium, or by hydrogenating 1-, 2-, or 3-hexene using a nickel catalyst. In industry, it can be separated from naphtha by precision distillation, and purified by removing benzene and other impurities. Flammable colorless liquid. Melting point -95.35 °C, boiling point 68.74 °C. 0.65481. 1.37226. Explosive range 1.3 to 6.9% by volume. Low chemical reactivity. Its main use is as a solvent, but as the hexane fraction of the mixture it is used as a solvent for extracting various oils and fats, as a diluent for essential oils, and as a rubber glue solvent.
