A war broke out between the United States and Spain in 1898 over the independence of the Spanish colony of Cuba. Also known as the Spanish-American War, the United States declared war on Spain after the Maine incident, defeated Spain in the Philippines, and signed a peace treaty in Paris. As a result, Spain paid $20 million in reparations, recognized Cuba's independence, and ceded Puerto Rico, the Philippine Islands, and Guam to the United States (for $20 million).
