The capital of Gotland County in southeastern Sweden. It is located in the northwest of Gotland Island on the Baltic Sea. It maintained close ties with the Hanseatic League and flourished as a commercial center in Northern Europe from the 10th to 14th centuries, along with Lübeck. Many church ruins and St. Mary's Cathedral, built in 1225 and later restored, testify to its former prosperity. After being occupied by King Valdemar IV of Denmark in 1361, it fell into decline and remained a small city with a population of less than 10,000 until the 20th century. It has an ice-free port and is a bustling commercial port. There are sugar, metal, lumber, and cement factories, but many people visit the city as a tourist destination due to the many historical sites. It was registered as a cultural heritage site of the World Heritage Sites in 1995. Population: 21,253 (estimated 1990).
