A political party in Pakistan. Originally founded in India in 1906, it was the leading Muslim political party in India, and was officially called the All India Muslim League at the time. Led by Aga Khan and others with the goal of improving the social status of Muslims in India, it acted in unison with the Indian National Congress. However, under Jinnah's leadership, in 1940 it adopted the slogan of separation and independence for a Muslim nation. Pakistan achieved independence in August 1947. It was dissolved in a coup by Ayub Khan in 1958, but was revived under the new constitution in 1962. The Awami League of Bangladesh was formed in 1949 as a splinter group from the Muslim League. → Related articles Ayub Khan | Pakistan | South Asia | Minto Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
