Born December 29, 1819. A feudal samurai of Matsushiro Domain, Shinano (Nagano Prefecture). Studied under Sato Issai in Edo. Served as a county magistrate, head of the private affairs department, and aide, and also contributed to the establishment of the domain school, the Literary and Military School. He was in conflict with Sakuma Shozan because of his support for the restoration of the Emperor and expulsion of foreigners. Later, he became the caretaker of Kyoto. He passed away on January 30, 1897. He was 83 years old. He was commonly known as Shinbi. His pen names included Togakushisha and Ippo. His works include "Kodo-Songi."
